At just 24, Dio is currently in her fifth quarter at The Art Institute in Santa Ana where she will be completing her diploma in cooking and baking in the year 2016. After that, she plans to pursue her business degree at OCC. So far, she loves cooking and baking just about anything and everything! Her style of food is either very traditional, authentic Mexican food or her own twist any traditional dish she likes. A life-long OC’er, Dio had the opportunity to broaden her horizons a few years ago when she traveled for a bit around England, France and Germany. The travel bug bit her and she now plans to go abroad and learn about as many new cultures and cuisines as she can!
Dio’s family is originally from Zitacuaro, Michoacan in Mexico. Her deep interest in food came in her teens but the spark for it, started at around age 5-6, with memories of her Grandma always being in the kitchen. Dio, credits this experience to finding her life-calling. In High School she had a lucrative cupcake business, selling out her “Betty Crocker” and “Dunkin Hines” cupcakes in first period which became a for-hire business for cakes and cupcakes for friends’ birthdays, dates and dances. She was hooked. Ever since then, her culinary curiosity never stopped. She began to really watch and learn from her Grandparents, as well as, the Food Network channel, videos on YouTube, and especially her Grandma. Dio feels very fortunate to still have her Grandparents in her life. She loves when the family gets together on the weekends, each bringing their own dishes to share. Dio is usually the one making the guacamole or dicing onion, Grandma flips the tortillas and keeps the kitchen in order, while Grandpa’s grilling. Everyone else is helping on the beans and rice. It’s a huge family affair that proves food does bring people together.
MY FAVORITE COMFORT FOODS:
For Dio, it’s Mexican, French and Italian. She feels all three work with simple ingredients that make up such incredibly delicious meals. From tamales filled with green sauce, to spaghetti and meat balls, to chicken chardonnay… (oh how she craves these!) As she says, “ I was born to eat!”
WHAT I LIKE TO DO WHEN I AM NOT COOKING:
Dio doesn’t stray far the kitchen in her down time…With the help of her Mom and Grandpa, she has a beautiful, Chef’s dream, outdoor kitchen in the backyard …So day’s off you will find her there making 100% from-scratch recipes or reinventing/creating new food. Or when she does step away from the oven, she will be relaxing, reading or watching anything about food. She also loves growing and planting her own garden thanks to Grandpa, the green-thumb gardener.
